Conservative Treatments

In the majority of patients, venous insufficiency may be treated conservatively. Conservative therapy includes physical measures such as limb elevation, exercise, and avoidance of prolonged standing or sitting. Medications such as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications or other analgesics may also relieve some symptoms. Compression stockings also help to alleviate the swelling and pain caused by varicose veins, however, they do not treat the underlying condition. The compression stockings should be worn whenever the leg is not elevated. Conservative treatment is usually attempted first, however, this does not treat the valvular incompetence and is aimed at controlling symptoms rather than curing the disease.

Diagnosing Varicose Veins

Varicose veins occur when the degree of damage to the vein is severe enough to cause it to enlarge and bulge out beyond the surface of the skin. Diagnosing the root cause of varicose veins is essential to its proper treatment.

With varicose vein disorders, vein failure occurs within the valves, allowing blood to leak backwards, causing congestion and enlargement of the vessel. Over time this can lead to swelling of the ankles and legs, skin breakdown, poorly healing wounds, severe pain and aching and complaints of “heaviness” or “tired” legs.

Treatment of the varicose veins must include eliminating the source of failure to give maximum results.

“I am very pleased with the treatment and the results that Dr. Jimenez recommended for my recurrent varicose veins. I had my legs stripped in the past, but within a few years my varicose veins were back. Dr. Jimenez found the source of my vein problems, and after having the laser treatment I no longer have problems with varicose veins or swelling of my legs. The cosmetic results are awesome ... my tiny incisions are practically invisible! Dr. Jimenez and his staff are professional, caring, and specially trained with the latest technology to fix my problems for good."

Do insurance companies pay for varicose vein treatment?

The majority of insurance companies cover varicose vein procedures for patients experiencing symptoms. Insurance companies are attracted to the fact that our procedures eliminate the need for hospitalization, general anesthesia, and lengthy recovery times. They like to see that patients have attempted conservative treatment such as elevation and compression hose.

Risk Factors For Vein Disease

Understanding the risk factors that come along with vein disease is a serious matter. Aging, menopause, and obesity are often linked to vein disorders although the most common factor for the development of varicose or spider veins is heredity - simply being born with weak vein valves. Additionally, increased pressure in the veins, such as that caused by prolonged standing, pregnancy, birth control pills, hormones, leg injury, and blood clots, are often the cause of vein diseases.
